Our Story

Lydia, Kenneth and Pat

KS'sPony Farm began in 1961, in the Northwest Alabama town of Moulton. Back then Kenneth was stationed in Taiwan with the USAF, and when we came back to the states, we were sent to Rantoul, Illinois. It was there that we were introduced to the POA, mainly through magazine articles. We had been in the Shetland business, but felt that the POA was the up and coming breed for children. We purchased GR’s Jet Fire to begin our POA ponybreeding program, and the legacy of KS’s POA Ponies began.

Our pony breeding program has three goals: disposition, conformation, and color. The first two are of extreme importance to us. Color is necessary for a POA to show, but disposition and conformation are a must from the very beginning. A POA can stand from 46-56" at the withers (11.2-14 hands), and must have a recognizable Appaloosa-type coat pattern as well as Appaloosa-type characteristics. The breed was started for -- and is still shown almost exclusively by -- children. Children show in four age groups: 6&Under Leadline, 8&Under, 9-12, and 13-18. A limited number of classes are offered for Adults with ponies 5 years old or under, such as: halter, longeline, yearling lead-through trail, English pleasure, western pleasure, pleasure driving, trail, and reining. POAs are known for their versatility, and a child may start the show day with halter and show straight through games (often 18 classes or more) with only one pony. We pride ourselves on being known for producing quality ponies that excel in this tough all-around competition.

KS's Siri Warrior was the first stallion we bred for, and it was only after careful study of bloodlines and performance records that we took GR's Warriors Winona to Lannan's Siri Super-Dot. The resulting blanketed colt grew up to be shown to earn his Supreme Championship in the show ring, and sire over 15 colored foals to earn his Proven Producer award as a sire.

Paper Tiger was the next addition to KS's Pony Farm, standing only 51 1/2" tall he was a striking black with white over his hips. His first year at the farm he serviced 14 of our mares, resulting in 14 colored foals the following spring. PT earned his ROM in Halter, a Proven Producer award, and a Premier Sire award. He sired over 10 Supreme Champions, the 1984 Select Sire Futurity Champion Weanling Colt, and stands 5th on the list of leading sires of International Champions, with 61 class wins credited to his get. PT’s undeniably great mark on the POA breed was recognized in 1994 when he was inducted to the POAC Hall of Fame.

Smokey Pants came to Alabama in 1984. After becoming a Supreme Champion himself, he was ready to put his stamp on the breed crossed with Warrior and PT's daughters. A bay roan with a blanket with spots over his entire body, he almost looked like a leopard. Pants sired many outstanding POA foals, earning his Proven Producer and Premier Sire Awards. Coming in 21st on the list of leading sires of International Champions, his get have earned 33 class wins. Induction into the POAC Hall of Fame in 1997 crowned his lifetime achievements and those of his foals that included over 8 Supreme Champions. Standing 53" he was also a good cross on daughters of our next stallion, KS's JW White Lighting.

KS's JW White Lighting was originally registered with the Appaloosa Horse Club. Since JW measured just 55 7/8", he was hardshipped into the POAC registry making him eligible to show. Although only shown lightly -- and mainly as an eight year old -- he stood Grand Champion Stallion at the Southeast Regional and reserve Grand Champion at the International Show. Because of his size and horse blood, JW was an excellent cross on the smaller Warrior and PT daughters. Along with his athleticism and good legs, JW frequently passed on his red roan color, blanket, stockings and blaze. A Proven Producer the year after he was registered as a POA, JW also earned his Premier Sire award, and stands 20th on the list of leading sires of International Champions with 34 class wins. Other accomplishments of his get include the 1987 Select Sire Weanling Filly Champion, at least 4 Supreme Champions, and many other halter ROMs and ROM Champion awards.

In 1993 a tragic barn fire cut short the lives of Pants and JW, as well as two other equines. Three young stallions emerged from this tragedy and today are carrying on in their sires' footsteps and winning traditions as the next generation at KS's Pony Farm. They are KS's Dash For Pants, KS's Heza Nifty Twist, and Alias Ghost King, ApHC, a half brother to the Appaloosa legend and Hall of Fame member, Dreamfinder. Their photos are only a click away, and their foals speak for themselves. At the 2002 International Show there were over 20 ponies sired by PT, Pants, JW, Nifty, Ghosty, and Dash. Ponies sired by all of the above stallions are showing and winning prizes, but most of all they win the hearts of people across the country by doing what POAs do best -- being a safe, quiet mount for children of all ages.
